If you are starting to learn to sing, but haven't found a teacher yet, you may find it hard to know which songs to try out on your own. People often start by picking something by their favourite singer, but all too often this means they are attempting a song that is way too hard for a beginner. For instance, stars like Mariah Carey or Leona Lewis are able to sing very high notes and complicated rhythms, so these may not be easy songs for beginners. That's why I have compiled a list of great songs for beginners.

In my twenty years of teaching singing, I have found the following songs to be of huge benefit to the student when starting to learn to sing. The songs have been selected because they display the following characteristics:

Memorable melody

Not too high

Good length of phrases

No awkward leaps or intervals

Straight forward rhythm

In English

Here's the list:

  1. Amazing Grace (traditional)
  2. Blue Moon (Richard Rodgers)
  3. Summertime (Gershwin)
  4. Autumn Leaves (Josef Kosma)
  5. Top of the World (The Carpenters)
  6. He's got the Whole world in His hands (spiritual)
  7. Oh when the Saints go marching in (trad)
  8. I don't know how to love him (from Jesus Christ Superstar)
  9. On my Own (from Les Miserables)
  10. My Bonnie lies over the Ocean (trad Scottish)
  11. Swing Low sweet Chariot (trad)
  12. You are my Sunshine (Jimmie Davis and Charles Mitchell)

As you can see, quite a few of these songs are traditional songs. Generally speaking, traditional songs can be a good choice as they tend to be simple without a big range. So, once you have mastered some of the above list, you can easily find more traditional songs to try out, by searching on the internet or going to a music library.

Imagine asking a beginning writer to write a short story from scratch. Our writer does not yet have much experience in writing but accepts the challenge and begins to plunge ahead.

He has to start somewhere so he begins to examine how to construct a short story. He learns all about plot, character, and structure and now believes he is ready to begin writing.

As soon as he begins to write, he discovers something. He can't move forward. He is blocked. What's the problem? He knows how to construct a short story and should be able to forge ahead right? The problem is he has not allowed his "voice" to unfold naturally. His internal critic is blocking the natural voice inside his head and the pen stops cold. What to do?

Our writer must learn to freewrite so words can flow freely and not be stopped by the editor voice. The same principles can be applied to us as musicians!

We may want to compose our own music and we may also know all about how to do it, but unless we are able to improvise freely and allow our own natural "voice" free reign, the music stops and we lose the ability to move forward.

This is why learning how to improvise is so important. It allows us to move forward! This benefits us in two ways. One, we begin to understand that the joy of music making itself is its own reward. Second, we begin to trust our voice and feel confident in our ability to move forward without judging the "quality" of the music.

I have a friend who always says that she wishes we would just bust out in random song and dance throughout the day. She believes that there would be less war, and definitely more entertainment in our everyday lives. I have to admit, I think I agree with her. Even though real life isn't all song and dance, we can pretend for limited amounts of time that it is reality. We can do this by watching musicals and Broadway shows. These offer great escapes from the sometimes dull path that we call life. But with so many of these to choose from, it may be hard to find the right one for your current mood. Here are just a few choices that you have, in detail.

Cats: This is one of the most famous Broadway productions. Even more famous then the name "Cats" is the producer, Andrew Lloyd Weber, who has produced many successful pieces. It is actually based off of T.S. Eliot's poems; you guessed it, involving cats. If you are a feline-lover, this is the perfect show for you. Just think; nothing but cats!

Wicked: I've heard lots of great things about this production. It is based off the book by Gregory Maguire called, "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West". This is a story from the perspectives of the witches of the Land of Oz. As a viewer, you will get to see a friendship, rivalry, jealousy, and opposing viewpoints and beliefs-all with great music.

Hairspray: This is one of my personal favorites. This is set in the 1960s and is full of racial tension. This has a great message and is very entertaining. Also, the main character is not the typical "popular" girl. She becomes popular because of her personality, rather than her looks. The characters learn that the personality is more important than what is on the outside.

Phantom of the Opera: Again, another of my all-time favorites. This production is based off of Gaston Leroux's novel with the same title. This musical offers everything from love, adventure, suspense, friendship, danger, and entertainment-with, of course, the most fabulous costumes and makeup.

Rent: This is considered a rock musical. It is brazen and a little in your face-- but in a good way. This musical follows a group of young artists and musicians living in New York. Their everyday life is a struggle for survival. The many things they deal with are AIDS, poverty, love, friendship, betrayal, and sacrifice. This is definitely a heart-wrenching production-but beautifully created and presented.

These are just a few; there are so many more available to experience. The variety of shows offers something for everyone. Also, for family outings there are a few Disney productions that are great for every age group. Before you purchase your Broadway tickets, make sure that you find the right one for you and others in your group-you wouldn't want to see something inappropriate for children. This way, the Broadway musical experience can be a remarkable memory that the whole family can remember with smiles.

Proverbs come from the Latin word proverbium. It is a phrase that has a lot of meaning metaphorically. So if you want to tell somebody do not sit idle else it may work against you, you can say, "empty mind is a devils workshop" which means if you sit idle you will end up thinking and doing evil things.

If a proverb is distinct from others with good phrasing it can be termed as an aphorism. When a proverb is used to describe a rule of conduct, it can be termed as a maxim. Proverbs were generally derived from different cultures and human experience that came from seniors in the society who knew how a situation and how should it be dealt with.

The books of Proverbs from the Bible and Latin language from the medieval times have played a significant role in spreading proverbs. A few proverbs are mentioned below so you have a thorough understanding of these powerful sentences.

-A friend in need is a friend indeed.

This famous Shakespeare's proverb used in his plays meant if a friend helps you out in your time of difficulty then he or she is truly a good friend.

A burnt child dreads fire

When a person comes across an accident it changes the person's attitude, fears, likes and dislikes for life.

-First come, first served

This is a very common proverb. Used by retail outlets, as and when offers are given out. Sometimes even at one's home it may be experienced, as the person who comes in first may get served with a dish and the person coming in later may miss it as it is over.

-As you sow, so shall you reap

This proverb is taught to us in schools where we are taught to think right and reap its benefits. A similar proverb is what goes around, comes around.

Some more include:

-A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush

-Between the devil and the deep sea

-Birds of a feather flock together

-A rolling stone gathers no moss

-Every cloud has a silver lining

-Fire is a good servant but a bad master

-All that glitters is not gold.

Just to summarise proverbs are nothing but short sayings or short stories which we have learned in our child hood days just as the nursery rhymes

Why is it that after years of studying something as a child, we forget later in life what we learned? Such is the common question of how to play piano despite years of lesson. Here i get you back to playing music even if you think you've lost it, and have begun to give up on how to play piano despite years of lesson.

First, realize that you have had lesson in piano, years of it perhaps, and that DOES count for a whole lot. How to play piano despite years of lesson entails mentally realizing that you really are only a step or two away from being able to play piano. The problem is that it seems like that first step is a big hurdle, and obviously a frustrating one having already had lesson, but unable to play.

Second: Start slow, do scales. Get the basic scales out and go through them. It took me actually having to number my keyboard at first, i had forgotten so much. From there i was able to translate the numbers to notes, and the scales began to get familiar. So often in trying to figure how to play piano despite years of lesson we don't want to succumb back to the simple things. This scale practice is also preparation for the next step.

Third. Twinkle twinkle little star. That's correct. I can't think of a better way to get back in the game and figure how to play piano despite years of lesson than to go back to a simple melody or song and start playing it over and over. This connects everything - the notes, fingerings, melody and sound - all together as one, and the simplest route is by practicing a simple children's song. Again the hardest part is going to mentally get over the hurdle of playing little kids songs when you "feel" as if you should be playing grander pieces. But if one wants to get to grander pieces and answer the question of how to play piano despite years of lesson, then one has to bite the bullet and get back to raw basics.

Finally, one should research new ways of learning to play piano! Since most people last took lessons years ago, they may not realize that new methods or techniques have come out that can cut to the chase much more clearly and quickly than before. From teachers to online courses, there are different outlets and methods to now explore while realizing how to play piano despite years of lesson is definitely an achievable goal!

Quick and Easy Piano learning methods do now exist. Check out http://www.squidoo.com/easy-piano-play/ for Chess's blog to further find out how to play piano despite years of lesson. Thanks so much for reading and feel free to check out http://www.squidoo.com/easy-piano-play/ Thanks!

Jell-O Without Whip Cream

Do you like Jell-O? It's okay I guess; I mean it's not a hot fudge sundae is it? But if you add a little whip cream, then my friend you've got something worth calling dessert. My question to you is, does your website have that something extra, that dollop of whip cream on top that says, "oh mama let me at it," or does it just lie there squirming in your dish with the sound of Peggy Lee's voice ringing in your ears, "is that all there is?"

If your website disappointments, you need something that provides the 'eureka factor' and that can be provided with a creative, informative Web-video.

The Chicago Bulls Without Michael Jordan

How the mighty have fallen, at least in terms of brand personality. I mean it's not like the Chicago Bulls stink? It's just that without MJ they're not the Chicago Bulls of old. When Michael played we all watched, he was magic, he wasn't just a great basketball player, he was a great personality and he gave the team it's character; no Michael, no personality.

Is your website like the new Chicago Bulls, a talented group of players with skills but no singular personality? Time for a humanity injection, add a Web-video featuring a signature character host who can generate some excitement and establish your unique business personality.

Television Without Sound

You're watching your favorite television show, say CSI, the Vegas one not Miami, and the phone rings. It's your mother. You turn the television's sound down so you can hear her but you're still watching the show. You love your Mom but Grissom has just discovered a new miniature killer clue and you need to know what is going on, but your Mom is carrying on about how your Dad needs new dentures or something Frustrating. No audio, no information.

Does your website have the same effect as watching television without the sound. It's there, people visit, but they leave without getting your message. Time to add a little life to your presentation in the form of a Web-video that tells your story out loud.

Words Without Meaning

Have you ever reread someone's website copy several times and still not understood what the heck they're trying to tell you, or maybe you understand every word but still can't figure out what they're selling?

Words have meaning, they are meant to convey a message not hide it. A lousy video script is no better than lousy print copy. Your Web-audience has no patience for mumbo-jumbo that masquerades as information or for text and dialog that says nothing in as many words as possible in an effort to attract the search engines. Words have meaning, say them with style and deliver them with conviction.

The Rumba Without Rhythm

Have you ever sat at a wedding and watched people dance? There are the people who know how to move, how to respond to the their partners and to communicate with the slightest of gestures or movements. And then there are the others who look like they've got something icky stuck to the bottom of their shoes and are trying desperately to remove it.

If you want to communicate to your audience, you have to use all the techniques available. Communication is more than just copy, its voice, gesture, movement and meaningful dialog.

Romance Without Kisses

Ah the first kiss, something special that can seal a relationship or sour it forever. Your landing page is like that first embrace. Is yours as exciting as it could be, or is it like the guy who spends the entire first date talking about his double entry booking keeping skills?

A well-crafted, expertly presented marketing message is like a seduction; if you're not generating any excitement don't expect to produce any sales either. Boring mission statement gobbledygook and keyword-laden palaver are not the same as an enticing video. An engaging business story, well told, is like a juicy wet-one planted right on your audience's lips.

A Joke Without A Punch Line

Everybody likes a funny story. A good joke is nothing more than a short story with a set-up, an escalation, and a twist, but the real key to a good story lies in the telling. Even comedians with second-rate material can get their audience's howling if they know how to deliver their material.

It's all well and good to repeat the mantra, "websites are about content," but if that content isn't delivered with some style and panache, don't expect anybody to pay much attention.

A Song Without A Hook

Hit songs are highly structured stories with verses that function as chapters or acts, and a chorus that provides the hook that sticks in your audience's heads. Add a toe tapping beat and some instrumental flourishes and you've got something that people will listen to over and over again.

Does that sound like your website presentation? Are people willing to come back to your site just to watch your presentation, or does your website leave visitors with a 'been there, done that' impression?

Information Without Knowledge

Just because you're in business doesn't mean you've got to be boring. And just because you dump a lot of facts and figures and bulleted points onto your Web-pages doesn't mean you're making a convincing argument for anyone to buy your stuff.

Web audiences demand more. If you won't give it to them, you can be sure someone else will, like maybe your competition.

Interactivity Without Purpose

Can we all just stop and take a breath and think about this whole interactivity thing. Let's all get interactive, why? I mean what is interactivity anyway? Is it developing a hugely expensive game that people can play on your website to avoid working, or is it getting them to click on the "Tell Me More" button?

I vote for the interactivity that leads to opening a dialogue with a potential client, one that gets visitors to pick up the phone and call you to discuss their needs, not the one that generates a "Game Over" message. Of course that assumes you're willing to actually talk to customers.

Frequency Without Resonance

I happened to like vinegar on my fries, okay it's weird I admit it, but the Dutch like mayonnaise on theirs, even weirder. I once had a chef in a Tucson restaurant come out of the kitchen and confront me when I asked the waiter for vinegar (it's a Canadian thing). The chef approached the table and asked who ordered the vinegar? I reluctantly raised my hand. "You must be from Canada," he said, "I'm from Victoria, where you from?"

Good advertising is all about delivering a message that resonates with your audience. It doesn't matter how many times you run an advertisement if that advertisement doesn't make an impression on your audience. You can't be afraid to be creative or even a bit weird.

Humor Without Laughter

Dr. Max Sutherland in his e-mail newsletter report, "False Alarm Theory: How Humorous Ads Work" describes how laughter is a hardwired residual mechanism that developed in our ape days as an 'all clear' signal once a danger had past. The 'all clear' message is passed on from one ape to another, until the entire troop is screeching with the ecstasy of survival.

A guy slips on a banana and breaks his neck - that's not funny. A guy slips on a banana, jumps up and looks around to see if anybody saw - that's funny. Humor is based on creating some sense of uncertainty or tension that is ultimately relieved with a humorous punch line or comforting resolution. The safe or amusing resolution creates a chain reaction in the audience that signals, "hay guys, all is well; everything is back to normal."

Without tension there can be no relief, no opportunity for an entertaining resolution that creates a cascading viral reaction among your audience. So don't expect your website to be passed on to friends and colleagues unless you deliver a compelling presentation that offers the opportunity to signal the rest of the world that all is well.

Dips, Lifts, and Solos to Spice up Your Salsa

Dips, Lifts, and Solos to Spice up Your Salsa

Featuring: Lisa Perez and Dave Morgan

Directed by Lee Soto Edited by Dave Morgan Distributed by Barrio Records
Customer Review: Weeeeeeell.....
The dips and lifts part is good. There isn't much instruction for the woman on this video other than curl your arm, keep clean lines, and other few things pointed out. I guess if you have a good leader and you are a good follower you wouldn't need much. I was disappointed with the solo part. I was expecting more instruction but she just does her thing and i guess you are supposed to learn by watching. I really would have preferred a breakdown. They did include a breakdown in the lifts that follow the solo. Overall, its pretty good, especially for the men or anyone leading, but found a little lacking on the woman's part.
Customer Review: Good selection
I would recommend this tape to anyone out there. The moves are excellant and well presented. If anything the lighting could have been better and there was too much space on the set such that the people seem to be too far back and you can't see their facial details. These are minor details however in the dance scheme of things. Good work overall.

When two middle-aged men tied the knot on March 16, they became the first legally recognised gay couple in Mexico City, the capital of the worlds second largest Catholic country.
When Mexican gays unite

Journalist Antonio Medina, 38, and economist Jorge Cerpa, 31, registered for homosexual partnership soon after the citys new law permitting gay civil unions took effect, according to the Associated Press.

The Mexicans were united in front of government buildings, kissing under a flag that read "Civil Union Law: Your right to choose" while a band played "Besame Mucho".

"With this law, a history of exclusion comes to an end," Medina told the AP. "Today, the love that before did not dare say its name has now entered the public spotlight.

Last November, Mexico City passed a bill to allow gays and lesbians to form a partnership protecting property, pension and inheritance rights. But it stops short of granting all the legal statues and rights of marriage.

Campaigners had promoted same-sex civil unions for 7 years before the municipal assembly recognized gay couples legal statues, the BBC reported.

"It is simply fantastic," said Julio Roman, a gay rights campaigner in Mexico City. "It is more than symbolic. It is the result of years of fighting for our basic rights."

Long road ahead

But not everyone is happy. Church officials and Christians reportedly took it to the streets to voice their objections.

"It is simply not the will of God to have acts of homosexuality," Armando Martinez Gomez, president of the Association of Catholic Lawyers, told BBC News.

"We are not against gay people," he noted. "But we believe in a union between a man and a woman for the creation of children."

Church officials have also called the new policy "Hitleria" and the citys politicians faithless, Reuters said.

Mexico City is not the first to take more liberal attitudes toward homosexuals in Latin America. Argentina's capital Buenos Aires, Mexicos northern state of Coahuila and Brazils southern state of Rio Grande do Sul all have legalised same-sex unions.

But the public still remains intolerant of gay couples agitating for legal rights in Mexico, where some 90 percent of its 107 million people are Catholics.

Only 28 per cent of adults support laws that would grant homosexual partners to legal statues and some benefits and rights, according to a poll by Parametra.

In 2005, every two days in Latin America a gay was killed because of his sexuality, reported the Belgium-based NGO International Lesbian and Gay Association.

Countries like Brazil and Mexico have the highest levels of hate crimes, because homosexual people become easy targets when coming out of the closet, said the Economist.

FRANZ FERDINAND - Reverse Logo - Brown Jersey T-Shirt

Brand New, never worn, front print brown Authentic FRANZ FERDINAND Jersey T-shirt.

What you see - With the boom in the social scene and a considerable increase in purchasing power, the metro finally got what it desperately needed with Bottles 'n' Chimney - an exclusive night-club with plush sofas, winding staircase and thumping music.

What you get - The first level of B&C (as it is popularly known) is a quiet lounge, while the ground floor has a lot more life in it. And the bar - bang in the center of the floor - is the obvious hub of activity. There are also two tiny dance floors, one on each level, with the music being played ranging from trance and club music to remixes and Indian theme music.

The club also has a large screen put up mainly for movies and sports. In fact during FIFA, the club was transformed into a football-lover's paradise. This tradition has continued through all the sporting events that followed. In fact this was the place which set the precedent in terms of starting the pub and cricket obsession in Hyderabad by putting up large screens. B&C also holds various events including concerts, food festivals and beer-guzzling contests, to entertain its guests.

Finally, for the uninitiated, Bottles & Chimney got its name from the surnames of its owners - Sanjay Batla and Sanjay Chimnani. Now how's that for subliminal self-advertisement?

The verdict - The crowd frequenting this place consists of working professionals in the age group of 25-35. Therefore, apart from good crowd, the assets of B&C are great music, affordability and a decent variety of drinks. However, the club could do with better lighting as it has too many corners plunged in darkness.

Customer Review: A must have DVD - Compralo si o si
A masterpiece. So far the best Unplugged of this decade. Julieta performs great and also in a unique way, full of feeling. Ms. Venegas rocks ! Do a favor yourself and order this DVD now.

The United States has Mardi Gras, Brazil has Carnivale, the Germans have Oktoberfest and Barbados has Holders Season. Each spring marks a nearly month-long celebration of culture, culinary delight, and fellowship in Barbados. Holders Season is indeed one of the premier cultural events in Barbados and the Caribbean. If ever there were a time to visit this island paradise, the visit would have to coincide with this celebration.

Holders Season is a celebration of opera, music, and theatre, and takes place in the beautiful gardens of Holders House, a 17th Century plantation home owned by John and Wendy Kidd and their family.

The venue is truly a beautiful outdoor setting under the trees with a history of fabulous events performed by musicians, actors, dancers, singers, writers and comedians from around the world. Visitors to Barbados in this time might enjoy the wide range of performing arts. Opera companies may perform a classic story set to Mozart, and playhouse companies may offer up their own interpretations of a Shakespeare tragedy. From classical music to the rhythmic beat of Caribbean and Latin American styles, the beat can be felt all over the island, and there is always occasion to dance and make new friends in Barbados during the Holder Season.

Although you can buy food and drinks before the performances and during intermission of most performances, most prefer to take personal picnic baskets with wine and champagne in order to enjoy an uninterrupted, sophisticated night under the stars. Holders Season is a celebration for couples and families alike, and anyone with an interest in island culture and island interpretations of other cultures.

At BarbadosBarbados.com, you can learn more about Holders Season and current schedules of performances. Don't forget, too, to plan ahead for this wonderful time.

Billy O'Dell is, with his wife Carolyn, the owner of BarbadosBarbados, an online concierge to Barbados tourism, and owner of Food Affairs, a Bajan catering company.
