One of the more striking aspects of the Beijing Opera is the Masks and Facial Make-up used to portray the various characters in a production. The use of symbolic colors, stylized lines, and fantastical facial exaggeration all serve the performance magic and grandeur. There is really nothing that compares to a skillful and artistic rendition of one of China's favorite stories from historical events and classical literature.

The current Beijing Opera originated from a combination of several sources. In 1790, the four great theatre groups from Anhui came to perform for the Royal Family. They used the traditional melodies and aria called Xi Pi. Around 1828, performers from Hubei joined them to form a combined troupe adding their own music called Er Huang. Thousands of pieces were performed regaling great tales of historic events and popular literature as well as their own versions of Western stories.

There have been scholarly discussions concerning the origins of Chinese theatrical mask wearing and face painting. A widely held theory is that face painting developed from the dances called " Lanlingwang (Prince Lanling)" from the Tang Dynasty (A.D. 618-907).

Another possible origin of this practice is rooted in the ancient use of Masks and Make-up in religious ceremonies, particularly exorcisms. There are examples of artwork that show shamans and other actors with stylized painted faces. Upon closer examination, these look very much like the early used of face painting and mask wearing in the Chinese opera theatre.

There is an old saying from the Song (960-1279) and Yuan (1271-1368) dynasties that was, "Shentou guimian", or "masks for Gods, make-up for ghosts." It meant that to play a god you must wear a mask, but to play a ghost all you needed was to slap some paint on your face. This followed the idea that gods were sacred and it would be sacrilegious, perhaps even dangerous, to portray them, whereas ghosts, the embodiment of disease, poverty and evil were not subject to such respect. Craftsmen who carved Deity masks believed that as soon as the eyes were carved out of a piece of art, it then became animated with the spirit of the gods.

Over time, actors began to think that it was less a sin to portray gods and spirits on the stage instead of in temples and palaces. They started to favor make-up over the stoic solid masks in performance. This allowed for more expression over the "dead face" of a mask to the "live face" of paints and dyes.

For the longest time, performers took great liberty in their choice of paint methods and colors. Later, during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) did there become some conventions and standards. An agency called Shengpingshu (Shengping Agency) was in charge of the affairs of opera performance. They established painting of more than 200 of the current operas with detailed instructions on the character make-up patterns. This became the official standard for face painting.

There are four basic categories of characters in the standard Beijing Opera.

SHENG - Male roles

DAN - Female Roles

CHOU - Comedy roles

JING - Painted face males

Jing, usually males, are the roles with facial painting representing warriors, heroes, statesmen, adventurers, and demons. Jing are found in three basic categories: Zhengjing, Fujing, and Wujing.

The JING roles are more known for courage and resourcefulness than for intelligence. Sometimes a High-ranking General or Warrior/General they usually have a swagger and great self-assurance. There are many common color schemes associated with Jing roles but some have more convention and are easily recognizable.

The compositions of face painting are classified into several patterns based on the belief that a person's face can reveal much about their personality. The overall designs of the face painting are given names like, "three-tiles face", "six-tenths face", "cross face", "slant face", "butterfly face" as well as many, many others.

The colors used on a Jing actors face have symbolic meaning.

RED - Good character, heroic

WHITE - Sneaky and treacherous

GREEN - Rash, lacking self-control

BLACK - Brusque character

BLUE - Wild nature, a robber or thief

GOLD/SILVER - Used only for Gods and Spirits

There are two main types of facial decorations in Chinese Opera: Masks and Facial Painting. Sometimes there are many changes of masks and make-up (even some without the audience's knowledge), this is called Changing Faces. It is a difficult technique that is only mastered after many years of serious and extensive training. This is sometimes used to display the feelings of a character or change the energy of the particular scene. Facial changes for sudden emotional changes are usually done in four ways:

BLOWING DUST - The actor blows black dust concealed in his palm so that it blows back into his face.

MANIPULATING BEARD - Beard colors can be changed while the beard is being moved from black to gray to white showing anger or excitement.

PULLING DOWN MASKS - The actor can pull down a mask that has been sitting on top of his head to communicate a special emotional change.

MOP - The actor mops out the greasepaint hidden in his sideburns or eyebrows to change his facial appearance.

dance steps are fine and not too difficult but steps are done to a percussion beat rather than to tunes and real latin music. I really prefer music and so this doesn't feel like dancing, just exercising, and therefore isn't as much fun.

I am a fan of salsa music and i thought that this dvd would be fun to try and put in a part of my work outs. The instructor was just wayyyy too much. too loud , too hyper. she came off very corny at times. lol. the video is just dumb. i dont know ,i just found her annoying.The music was good and all but i just cant take her. I dont do this video often. Once in a blue. It really wasnt as good as thought it was gonna be. i have other crunch video but come on now. they need better instructors.

Adults have a greater sense of ethical responsibility and a respect for hard work, and are less likely to download music for free.

Many artists are adopting a more extreme independent approach by forming their own record labels. This allows them to have complete creative control over the record making process and is the ultimate in self-expression for any indie artist.

Most artists think that signing with a major label will be their ticket to the big time and that the money will come rolling in. In fact, artists have to sell about 1 million albums before they start seeing their share of the profits, as their studio time and all of the "perks" of the business, such as the limo rides, are charged against their royalties. Royalties might also be heavily weighted in favour of the label. Many artists are surprised to find that they earn only $1 per disc sold.

Compare that with an indie label, which with careful planning and budgeting, is able to keep marketing and overhead expenses within a manageable range. With expenses down, the profit margin is larger. They also have fairer profit sharing deals, often splitting profits equally between the label and the artist. When it comes to selling discs, indie artists can sell discs at a concert and make a decent profit from sales numbering in the thousands only.

One of the biggest and perhaps most distinguishing differences between indie and major labels is that indie labels let artists keep the rights to their work. Large labels have the option of not releasing any music an artist has recorded, and all the while the artist remains bound to them by contract and can't sign up with any other label. The artist is taken out of the public eye and effectively has his or her career terminated at the whim of the label.

Many experts involved in the music industry have predicted that major record labels are going the way of the dinosaur. They attribute this mainly to the large labels' inability to read and react to activity in the music market. Large labels create such huge promotional vehicles around their artists that it takes them too long to react to a drop in record sales, and change their marketing strategy. Conversely, if an artist's sales pick up after a slump, it takes the label too long to get a large promotional and marketing strategy off the ground. Indie labels, on the other hand, are ideally placed to take advantage of market movements, as they are small and can move quickly to capitalise on opportunities or invest in some damage control.

It's been said that big labels have forgotten what's important in the music industry, that the artists are the resource to be treasured and not the songs. Indie music and, as a product, indie labels have never forgotten this fact. Artists have always been recognised as respected contributors to the music industry. They have always been fairly counted into whatever profits there may have been. Indie labels do their best to adhere to the principles and culture upon which the indie scene has been built. By doing this, they have managed to achieve comparatively more success than the big boys in the industry. This must be a big blow to those who believe that non-conformists will never be successful in life.

Throughout the essay, I will explore other reformers and sects who followed in Luther's wake to challenge the established religious ways. I will be concentrating on Zwingli; Calvin, and the Anabaptists. I will expound upon the main differences between their religious interpretation and Luther's own positions.

Like Luther, Zwingli; Calvin, and the Anabaptists contributed to the great Reformation - the reformation that hastened the Disintegration or the Dissolution of the Medieval Catholic Church during the Disintegration period of the 14th century to the 15th century, and beyond. Muentzer, who instigated the 1525 Peasant Rebellion while Luther was under the protection of Fredrick the Wise, was more radical than Luther. Muentzer wanted to reform the temporal aspects of the Reformation. Hence, he wanted to abolish serfdom on the basis of 'true Christianity.' Luther denounced Muentzer (a German monk and Luther's friend) for his radicalism. Luther stated Muentzer's execution was God's punishment on him.

Zwingli is a Swiss nationalist and reformer based in Zurich. He agreed with Luther on most points. However, Zwingli disagreed with Luther on Consubstantiation.

Zwingli argued the word 'is used in its Greek/Latin form means'signify'. Therefore, the Communion is neither a rite of Transubstantiation nor Consubstantiation. Rather, the Communion is 'a memorial service' of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Zwingli's disagreement created a mountain between himself and Luther. As a matter of fact, the Swiss Protestants under Zwingli were not supported by Luther's German Protestants in their war against the Catholic forces because of their disagreement (carved by Luther on a negotiating table, "This is my body" in Latin). The disagreement was so sore that Luther exclaimed, 'he got what he deserved.... His death proved I'm right and he's wrong; upon hearing of Zwingli's demise in battle (a Bible in one hand and a sword in the other).

Calvin, a French transplant based in Geneva, shared many points with Luther. However, like Zwingli, Calvin believed the Communion is a 'Memorial Service' instead of a Consubstantiation. Luther believed what's not in the Bible, is allowed - for example, singing and dancing. In contrast, Calvin believed everything that's not supported by Scriptures is forbidden by God, including singing and dancing.

Calvin was more extreme than Luther as per 'the doctrine of Predestination.' For example, God chooses who is going to Heaven and damned others to go to Hell. Calvin wanted to create 'a new Jerusalem' on earth (via Geneva). He believed in good living (capitalistic somewhat) of Christians (Christians should be the best they can be....)

The Anabaptists is a sect that spread all over Europe. Today, the Amish sects are descendants of the Anabaptists. Unlike Luther, the Anabaptists only believe in adult baptism (hence their name). They reject oaths, swearing, violence and etc. They believe man should imitate Christ. Thus, the Anabaptists are the true elect of the Church. The Anabaptists were harshly persecuted by both the Catholics and other Protestant sects because of their aforementioned beliefs (which they consider a threat to the security of society). Nonetheless, an Anabaptist sect led by John of Leyden violently took over a town named Munster. This Anabaptist sect was the exception as per their use of violence. They were defeated, eventually. The leaders were hung in a cage by a church in the town of Munster as stated by the esteemed historian - Dr. Wladyslaw Roczniak.

In conclusion, I explored other reformers and sects who followed I Luther's wake to challenge the established religious ways. Plus, I concentrated on Zwingli, Calvin and the Anabaptists. I expounded upon the main differences between their religious interpretation and Luther's own positions.

In this article I will be basically showing you the different types of guitar. This article is based at first time beginners.

There are two types of guitars and then two different styles of those two type of guitars. So we will start with the acoustic guitar. The acoustic guitar produces noise by the sound waves echoing through the hollow body. There are two style of acoustic guitar which are:

Nylon: A Nylon means that the strings are made out of nylon. The top strings may look like they are made out of steel, but in fact they are coated (with a special type of metal that I cant remember the name of) and are made of nylon in the inside. Nylon guitars are great for the classical sound and relaxation. Since these guitars are soft stringed I highly recommend them to any beginner as they help you get the gist of playing guitar.

Steel: A steel stringed acoustic guitar have strings that are made out of steel as you would have guessed. These guitars here are generally played either strumming or finger picking and can create a relaxation sound or a catchy beat. Many artists use the acoustic guitar like Jack Johnson and Pete Murray. These guitars can be hard to play for some people as it requires you to push the strings in pretty hard on the fretboard to make a clean sound. You can get acoustic electric guitars which are still a still stringed electric but have pickups inside the hollow body.

Now we get to the electric guitar. Electric guitars make there sound by the pickups located under the strings. The sound is "picked up" with these and sends the sound through a cord to an amplifier. This then amplifies the sound which can be changed by the different knobs located usually at the top of the amp. The two types of electric guitars are:

Solid Body: Solid body guitars are steel stringed guitars. These guitars are generally used in Metal, Rock, Blues and Pop Music. These guitars are great because if you turn the distortion up, it can sometimes hide your mistakes. It is better though to practice in a clean sound so that you get used to perfecting the notes and getting a good nice clear sound.

Hollow Body: These electric guitars also have steel strings. These are basically the same as a solid body but as the name suggests they are hollow. Sometimes they are only hollow by the f notes you see on the old fashion basses, Chellos ect. These guitars are generally used in Jazz and blues category.

Now strings. Guitar strings are wonderful because they come in many different types. If you are a beginner you should start off with low gauged strings so you can develop how to play the notes clean and well. Strings should be changed regularly because the oil on your fingers and other chemicals in the air damages the strings an can make the sound of your guitar not as good (bad phrasing).

5. Dance...

There's usual some sort of music at most holiday functions, so get on the dance floor! You will get a break from the constant socializing and burn off a few goodies while you're at it.

6. Throw a party... As host or hostess, you'll certainly get your share of activity throughout the night!

7. Help tend bar at a friends party. Offer to tend bar for an hour or so at a friends party, the host or hostess will be grateful and the shaking and stirring is a surprising workout!

8. Take advantage of winter sports. Ski, snowshoe, sled, or skate; unless you live in a nordic region, the infrequency of your participation in the afore mentioned activities keeps them fun and fresh.

9. Avoid the tree lots.. Venture into a designated "u-cut" area with permit in hand and cut your own tree. You'll enjoy the authenticity and selection in choosing your tree and the actual cutting of the tree is a great arm workout.

I will say this I'm Hispanic so I did know some Salsa before I purchased this DVD. I wanted to learn some advanced moves and I realized before I purchased this video that prob wasn't for me. It wasn't but it did teach me some basic concepts in general. It also taught me how to turn. I'm a natural dancer but it gave me concrete steps which I just do without thinking. That being said I do believe this will teach ANYBODY to dance. He gives so much detail and repetition there is no way you won't be able to pick it up. I love the hand tricks. Also I didn't have a partner and this a partner video. Don't buy if you have dance experience.

The instructions are clear and easy to follow. My husband has absolutely no rythym and he picked up the steps.

Cha-Cha music is 4/4 time, and also has 4 steps to a bar of music. The last bar screams for you to step to the left and close your feet so this step has the characteristics of moving the foot to the side and closing the feet, which in turn produces the "cha-cha" sound, which is the name of the dance.

If you are having trouble understanding the basic movement of Cha-Cha which is usually said to be slow, slow, quick-quick, slow, then rephrasing it to "rock, rock, side-close, side", makes it far easier to grasp.

Most Latino dances consist of moving your step on the second beat and change the weight from one lef to the other between beats, but in cha cha your feel always move only on the first, second and fourth beats of the music. This little switch of weight makes the look and feel of the dance occur on the first and second beats, then on the third and halway through the fourth and first beat.

Count from the second beat of music to make it simple. Count "Two-Three, Cha-Cha, One" - if you know the basic movements you'll soon see this becoming meaningful.

There are more than one part to timing, TWO. There is a static metronome beat that flows though the entire track, which in turn dictates when it's time to move your feet. Another one is the actual tempo of the song. The tempo is what makes you take a certain step, pause for a period of time or how fast you should spin and turn. Understanding this will make you a preferable cha cha dancer.

You can't mistake a Cha Cha beat in a song. You hear the two slow beats and the three quicker beats. Then when you hear the quick beats you move side and close, cha cha cha.

Everyone is a a Star at a High School Musical Dance Party! With the 3rd installment of the HSM series coming late in summer 2008 this event is sure to be a huge hit! Invitations: Purchase the matching theme invitations or make your own tickets or backstage passes by visiting says-it.com and choosing the template for "concert tickets." Its totally free and super easy! Fill out what you want the ticket or pass to say, download, save and then print out as many copies as you need. Simple! I created a pretend invite on the right hand side so you can see what they look like.

There are several shapes, colours and designs to choose from. Use phrases like "Backstage Access'',"VIP Only" and "Admit One." Call you local Dance Studio and see if they have a student that would be willing to come the party and teach a short routine from the movie. Games: "Name That Tune" - Play short clips from the soundtrack and popular top 40 songs. Have the guest try to name the tune and if they can, they get 1 token. If they can sing the next line they will win an additional token. I will explain the tokens in a bit so stay with me. "Who said It" - Before the party, write down several lines from the movie and the character that said it. On separate slips of paper, write 1 line only (not who said it) and place in a hat or basket. Take turns by passing the hat around and having each guest choose a piece of paper and reading the quote out loud. They then have a chance to guess. If they are correct they win a token. "Hoop Toss" - The HSM kids love their East High Wildcats Basketball Team so be sure to add a b-ball activity. Why not set up a hoop toss. You can use an indoor ball and net or make your own with a wastebasket and any ball you have on hand. Every player gets 10 shots and 1 token is awarded for every basket made. The kids will really want to know what these tokens are for by now! To start the dancing portion, play a few rounds of dance freeze and have some spot dances. "Dance Freeze" is when you abruptly stop the music and the dancers must immediately freeze in whatever posoitiion they are in. If they can hold their position they are awarded 1 token. "Spot" dances is simply when you choose a certain spot in the room and whoever is closest to that spot at the end of the song wins - 1 token. Make sure you keep a running list of all the tokens awarded.

Start off each child with 10 tokens and add on from there. The Menu: A cafeteria line of course! Borrow some plastic trays from your local fast food joint and let the kids line up single file and choose their meal. Have individual servings of hamburgers & hot dogs wrapped in foil, mini pizzas, fries in baskets, salads in cups and a selection of sodas, juice boxes and milks in those small containers. Make a "Cafeteria" sign and provide the lunch lady with a hairnet! Finally we get to the tokens! Switch out the "Cafeteria" sign for an "HSM Concession Stand" sign. During the last half hour of the party set up your concession stand. The Concession stand should consist of items that you would put in their loot bags like bags of chips, candies, chocolate bars, pop, cookies & gum, tattoos, glow sticks, hackey sacks, microphones, key chains, pencils, erasers, costume jewelry and licensed HSM favors. The key is to have a wide assortment of different items as all kids will not choose the same things. In this situation it would be safer to over buy and then return items if you do not use them. Give each child their allotted tokens and a paper lunch bag or a licensed HSM loot bag to fill.

The tokens can be bingo markers, play coins, paper tickets, pennies or buttons for that matter! Have a token board with the items listed for sale and their cost in tokens for the kids to see. The more costly the item, the more tokens they cost. For example, an eraser is 1 token, a pack of bubblegum is 2 tokens and a microphone is 3 tokens. To be fair, have them line up by the amount of the tokens they won - for example the lowest to highest. Have each child in turn buy 1 item and then return to the back of the line. Keep going until all the tokens have run out. This takes a bit of planning but provides a very exciting element to the party! The kids take home things they actually want and will use - not just forget about and throw away!

I look forward to going home every night (and probably much to my neighbors' and roommate's dismay) to try to play and sing at the same time. The music is for the piano to accompany the rest of the band, so it doesn't always carry the melody. But it's awesome and not too bad. The abundance of sharps and flats may scare some, such as me, but in the end the chords are not too difficult; there is a lot of repetition. I am particularly fond of many of the songs. I hope this helps! Personally, I prefer Parachutes.

During the sixth edition of the Miss Universe pageant, there were all sorts surprises. It was rumoured that the pageant preferred candidates from countries that were experiencing political crisis.However,Miss Greece, Lygia Karavias, did not qualified for the semi-finals. Experts predicted that two favourites Misses Germany and England- would win and keep the crown in Western Europe. Miss Germany, Gerti Daud, was crowned Miss Photogenic Universe.

Most marrying couples often do not give much thought to ceremony music. With the exception of "Here Comes the Bride" there are not many songs that are directly associated with the wedding ceremony. However now more and more couples are spicing up their ceremony with a variety of songs, musicians and singers. Even the standard - the organ - is taking a back seat to other musical instruments - including horns, strings and even the elegant musical organ "the Harp".

A wedding or a wedding reception without music can be said to "lacking something". It just misses the mark. Take care and attention for the music arrangements at your wedding and wedding reception. After all your wedding day is "Your Day in the Sun."

I have fond memories of this album from my childhood. I remember my mother trying to hide the album cover because it was so racy for the times(at least in So. LA). But the folks did play it often. The music is still great. It sound as wonderful today as it did forty years ago. It stands the test of time.

The Birmingham ArtsFest is an annual festival that features the best in arts and entertainment that the West Midlands have to offer. This festival was inspired by the UitMarkt festival in Amsterdam. It was first held in 1998 with the purpose of showcasing the local artists' work and brings international attention to these talents.

ArtsFest is collaboration between the Birmingham City Council and Audience Central, a research agency dedicated to promoting and improving people's participation in the West Midlands' arts scene. In 2005 however, the Birmingham City Council started organizing the festival on its own.

The celebrations primarily take place at Centenary Square but activities are also held at Victoria Square, Custard Factory, Brindleyplace and Chamberlain Square.

The 2007 festival highlights are the giant air sculpture and an Arts Village. The air sculpture, called the Luminarium is a gigantic construction of tunnels and domes that can be explored by visitors. The Visual Arts Village features a wide array of artistic creations ranging from print-making to sculpture.

Activities are varied depending on which cluster area you are visiting. The areas and their respective events for the 2007 festival are as follows:

Centenary Square - in Centenary Square, featured performances are:

1. Painting on the Railings where local artists sold affordable artwork to visitors.
2. Drum voice orchestra and kiss the ceiling accapella singers. This is where performances from African orchestra and an accapella group make the celebrations even more festive.
3. Acrobatic arts performances
4. The Birmingham St. Patrick's Festival
5. Performance from the Birmingham Young Voices choir.

Chamberlain and Victoria Square Cluster - In this cluster you can witness the following:

1. A comedy performance at the Custard Balti Comedy Club
2. A singing workshop at the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.
3. A dance performance showcasing an eclectic mix of dance styles presented by the Windsor Dance company.
4. A drama performance and a presentation featuring a combination of World music and poetry.

Brindleyplace Cluster - The Brindley Place cluster events included:

1. A children's street dance performance based on "High School Musical."
2. A fun carnival workshop where visitors could learn mask-making and such similar activities.
3. A family-oriented and hands-on activities centered on a carnival theme.
4. A fashion show held at the Brindleyplace fountain.

Rep Cluster and CBSO Cluster - Activities in this area includes:

1. A workshop on t-shirt printing and badge-making.
2. A den-making activity where kids can make their own hideouts.
3. A songwriting workshop, storytelling, poetry and musical activities for children.
4. A Jazz-Latin performance
5. The Make your Mark with Art event, where visitors are asked to help make artwork to raise funds for charity.

St. Martin's and Eastside Cluster - The St. Martin and Eastside cluster featured events such as:

1. The revitalization of oral traditions through storytelling
2. A steelpans musical performance backed by Caribbean dancers doing street dance.
3. An exhibit of clay sculpture and a clay workshop.
4. The Festival of Extreme Building where a display of experimental buildings were showcased.

A street theater festival was also another highlight of the 2007 ArtsFest where performances and activities ranging from walkabout characters to circus troupe shows were featured.
