Digital Pianos - Which Brand Should I Buy?
Ok, you want to buy a digital piano. You have visited lots of music shops and tried lots of digital pianos out. You have been given lots of conflicting advice and dont know what to do!
This is sadly what many shoppers experience when they want to buy a digital piano and they go to their
local piano shop armed with a few print outs from the internet but not enough knowledge or the right advice to make an informed decision.
Go Shopping for digital pianos
You enter your local piano shop and are confronted with lots of digital pianos, different styles, colours, shapes. Some digital pianos have a few buttons, some hundreds of buttons and flashing lights HELP!!!
You want some advice but unfortunately the advice you will get from the salesman will always favour the shops profit over yourself.
You visit one piano shop and they recommend the Roland digital piano it is the best digital piano around by far, amazing sounds and it plays and feels just like a real piano they say.
You say What about the Yamaha, I have heard that it is a very good piano as well?
They say No, the Roland digital piano is far better than the Yamaha. They then sit down and play
the Yamaha and then the Roland and convince you that the Roland digital piano is definitely far better than the Yamaha.
Why do piano shops always try to push a particular model or a particular brand?
Well the reason behind this is that they are either eager to get rid of a model or they are
simply making more money on one brand than they are the other.
You trot off to another piano shop to get some more advice and to compare prices. Again you walk in
and you are confronted by a similar set up. The salesman, like before, shows you the different digital pianos
and advises you that the Casio is the best digital piano and not the Yamaha, and certainly not the Roland. The Roland digital piano is way over priced!
You explain that you have just been to another piano shop and were told that the Roland digital piano is better than the Yamaha, and the Casio is nowhere near as good. They dont know what they are talking about the salesman says. Now you are utterly confused and walk out of the shop a little angry.
If you have experienced the above and are at the end of your tether, I am here to help and offer you unbiased advice on which digital piano you should consider, the merits of each one and the strengths and weaknesses. Read on
Yamaha digital pianos
The Yamaha digital piano is the most popular digital piano today. More Yamahas are sold than any other digital piano by a long way.
Yamaha have got where they are today by superior branding, advertising and product development.
Yamaha put in so much effort to make their digital pianos (known as Clavinova) sound and feel as close to a real piano as possible, the sound sample they use for their digital pianos is taken from their own concert grand piano.
Rating: 9 out of 10.
Advice: Go ahead and buy any Yamaha digital piano from the range.
Price: Basic models start from RRP 989. You should be able to buy a Yamaha digital piano on the web for about 20% off.
Casio digital pianos
The Casio digital piano has improved vastly over the previous few years. The Casio digital pianos were considered mediocre a few years ago, but now their improvements have been so great they are considered to be one of the best digital pianos on the market today.
Casio digital pianos are, and have always been, the best value for money. The Casio digital pianos are not quite as good as the Roland or the Yamaha but they are generally cheap digital pianos, between half and two thirds the price of the Yamaha and Roland digital pianos.
Rating: 7 out of 10.
Advice: Fantastic value for money! Go ahead and buy any Casio digital piano from the Celviano range (Casio AP). You might want to consider the Casio Privia digital piano range if you are short of space.
Price: Basic models start from RRP 799.99. You should be able to find some great deals on the web.
Casio digital pianos generally sell for around 28-30% off RRP.
Roland digital pianos
The Roland digital piano is built with quality and produces nice piano tones, especially around the centre of the keyboard. The sound is a little thin and false around the middle to high treble though.
Roland has always been known to value their brand extremely highly and will not reduce their prices if it means the quality of their digital pianos would be compromised.
The sound sampling for the Roland digital piano is taken from a Steinway concert grand piano.
Rating: 8 out of 10.
Advice: Go ahead and buy any Roland digital piano from the HP, F or KR range.
Price: Basic modesl start from RRP 899. Prices seem to be fixed on the internet so you wont be able to get much more than 5% off RRP. You will probably get a better deal on a Roland digital piano from your local music shop.
Korg digital pianos
Korg are perhaps better known for their high end keyboards and stage pianos. They do produce a limited range of digital pianos that offer functions similar to the Casio digital piano.
Korg digital pianos are quite reasonably priced but their performance falls short of the Yamaha, Roland and Casio digital pianos.
Rating: 4 out of 10.
Advice: Wouldnt really consider a Korg digital piano, but some people like their sound.
Price: Basic models start from RRP 999. You should be able to buy a Korg digital piano on the web at around 30-35% off.
Kawai digital pianos
Hugely hyped up digital pianos! Kawai proclaim to have produced the perfect piano action and piano sound by some wizardry potion that no other company can obtain complete hogwash!
I have tried and tested these digital pianos out and find that the keys are too light and spongy and the sound is very bright, harsh and electronic.
Rating: 3 out of 10.
Advice: Wouldnt really consider a Kawai digital piano, unless you are fond of the Kawai piano sound.
Price: Basic model starts from RRP 999. You should be able to buy a basic Kawai digital piano on the web at around 20-25% off RRP.
Gem digital pianos
Gem digital pianos look very nice indeed and have a great name behind them. They do lack in quality though, the sound is very poor and they offer a limited range of digital pianos. The lid tends to make a squeaking sound and the keys are quite noisy. They proclaim to use Drake Technology in their pianos sounds impressive doesnt it? But what is it? Well, It really is just a feature to help them sell, but I dont
personally see much of an improvement in their digital pianos.
Rating: 3 out of 10.
Advice: Probably wouldnt consider a Gem digital piano, but if you like the polished ebony look, it is the cheapest digital piano in that particular colour on the market.
Price: Basic models start from RRP 999. You probably wont be able to get much of a discount on Gem digital pianos, as these pianos are not very popular and there is not much competition online.
Ketron digital pianos
Ketron make good digital pianos but they are very expensive, especially the digital grand pianos.
If you have money to burn then consider these pianos, otherwise go for one of the big three Yamaha, Roland or Casio.
Rating: 6 out of 10.
Advice: Probably wouldnt consider a Ketron digital piano unless I had lots of money to throw away, but if you really like the sound - some people do - then go ahead!
Price: Basic models stars from RRP 1299. You probably wont be able to get much of a discount on a Ketron digital piano, as these pianos are not very popular and there is not much competition online.
Suzuki digital pianos
Suzuki make fantastic motorbikes, but digital pianos??
Yes Suzuki is very famous for their motorbikes but also Suzuki is hugely famous in the world
of musical instruments. They are famous for the Suzuki teaching method, they make great violins and bows, recorders, harmonicas, guitars and reasonable acoustic pianos.
Suzuki digital pianos, however, unfortunately dont quite make the grade. The Suzukis sound is poor, the build quality is appalling and the touch is rather dreadful. They are very cheap digital pianos. Sorry Suzuki, but I have to tell the truth.
Rating: 2 out of 10.
Advice: Dont buy a Suzuki digital piano. Pease dont buy a Suzuki digital piano. Never buy a Suzuki digital piano! There are so many other good digital pianos out there, why would you want to throw your money away buying a Suzuki digital piano?
Price: Basic model starts from RRP 799. You can pick up generous discounts on Suzuki digital pianos (20-25%). Beware of your local piano shop if they are trying to sell you a Suzuki digital piano. Ask them how it compares to a Yamaha digital piano or a Roland.
Kurzweil digital pianos
Kurzweil are well known for their keyboards and pro audio products but not so much for their digital pianos. Kurzweil digital pianos have been around for a long time, they have been mainly distributed in America up until recently. The Kurzweil digital piano is very robust and produces a good sound.
Rating: 5 out of 10.
Advice: Might be worth trying one out if you can find a Kurzweil digital piano stockist. I have seen of these pianos on Ebay.
Price: Check Ebay, as this is probably the only place you will find them on the web.
More digital pianos (not in the same league as above)
Alesis, Bohemia, Bohm, Daewoo, Ensonio, Farfisa, Hammond, Orla, Samick, Solton, Technics, Viscount Allegro, Wersi.
These digital pianos are much worse than any of the above digital pianos I have reviewed and should definitely not be considered.
I can recommend and good website that offers comprehensive information, unbiased advice, reviews and a range of most of the digital pianos mentioned above:
Digital Pianos: Yamaha, Roland, Casio, Korg and more - Soundsmusical.com
I hope that armed with the above information you can now go out and buy a digital piano.
Dont take too much notice if you feel you are being pushed towards any particular digital piano.
Ask the piano salesman to demonstrate a few different piano brands and then make the decision yourself
based on the above information and what you feel is right for your needs.
Best of luck and I hope you enjoy your new digital piano!

Animal Teachers Reveal Success Through Pleasure
What the anteater and otter show us about success
Its been called the id by Freud, and hedonism by zealots. In truth, the animal self is the part of us that seeks pleasure. Labeling this limits our experience of it. Still for the sake of reference Ill describe this very free, intrinsically joyful aspect of being as animal. Animal encapsulates it. The living world seeks out pleasure and avoids pain without fear of appearing lazy, foolish or greedy. The irony is that for many animals this creates productivity, dignity and unselfishness. By looking at their actions from a spiritual rather than biological viewpoint we have a tool to unhinge ourselves from our hang-ups.
You otter play
Almost all animals play and act silly when young. Otters continue this into old age, making him a fun furry dude to be around. They romp, wrestle, snow slide, chase each other and play catch-and-release with their dinner. Most of us, myself include, are not nearly so free spirited. For example, I havent tobogganed since I was eleven and my romping is confined to a spirited jog. I could learn a lot from an otter. Most important: Play is good.
Play is good. We forget this in our rush to achieve and amass. In the otters game of dinner lost-and-found he shows us that losing can be just as much fun as winning. This is contrary to ego but so is spirit. In the otters dinner-game he loses lunch but finds freedom: He doesnt need to eat if he doesnt want to. Spiritual aspirants who fast for greater consciousness believe the same but have a lot less fun in the process. The otter has a better idea. He relinquishes without regret or strain.
Dances with spirit
Play is one of the few ways we can lose ourselves without trying. Caught in the moment we may realize a meditative type bliss. Dance can feel like play but for some it is meditation. The spontaneous spasms that characterize ecstatic dance allow us to express spirit with the body. When else can we do this? Compared to ecstatic dance our movements are rigid as a robots arm. When did we become so reserved? Play and dance help us to become more spontaneous. For some this will be met with cheers. For others, and unfortunately, jeers. It takes courage to march to the beat of a different drum. Yet in practicing courage we develop it. Dancing our private dance in front of the marching crowd is a challenge.
Besides unknotting our muscles, ecstatic dance unties our mind. Though historically this practice has been thought to exist only among humans it seems that the otter, with his flipping and wriggling, would make a great ecstatic dancer. Unlike us he doesnt wait for the music to start to move in a musical fashion. His body is free and expressive. He chooses to move with the fluidity of waves rather than the rigidity of trees. We have the same choice. We dont have to jump in the water to enjoy this experience. Mind-body exercises like pilates, yoga and tai-chi cultivate this creative body motion.
Joyful errors
People make mistakes; animals evolve. We judge ourselves so harshly. Distinctions between right and are necessary in terms of moral issues but they have no meaning when it comes to trying new things. Yet when we make a mistake we are often the first to notice and hope to God no one else does. Nobody likes to feel humiliated. Most of us are concerned about looking foolish or feeling like were on display to be laughed at. Interestingly, feeling humiliated and being humiliated are two separate matters.
I once watched a show called Pet Star, where an anteater was called to perform an exceptional feat: Climb up a ladder, eat from a bucket, and climb back down. His trainer/owner watched anxiously as the scaly critter ascended the metal stairs. There were a series of clunks on his journey as his tail patted the ladder and a louder clunk when he reached the bucket. He had tipped it over. A heap of berries and throngs of audience members bore witness to shame. But it wasnt the anteater that cringed- it was the owner. The blushing young man proceeded to stammer out excuses for the creature, which by this time had climbed down and was happily eating his dinner off the stage floor. Under the glaring stage lights that illuminated his owners red-face and sweaty brow, no change could be found in the anteater. He was intent on claiming his berry-delicious reward. Whether or not anyone was impressed didnt matter.
That anteater didnt catch any awards that day. He did, however, capture my heart. I remember what that anteater taught me: There are many mistakes on our way to victory, and others may have not feel we have earned it. We can let this bother us, or like the anteater, we can dine on what we deserve.
Failure is relative
Though his efforts were obvious the anteater didnt perform as desired by others. The anteater dealt with this in a better way than most people. Unlike the anteater we try to interpret others interpretation of us. This is agony for both inner peace and performance. When feeling like weve failed we interpret every blink as shock and mouth twitch as dismay. This creates the disappointment we fear. We can turn a stumble into slapstick if we have the confidence of Chaplin. Similarly, a misplaced streak on a canvas can create abstract perfection if we desire. Either way we must persist. What if the anteater was to stop striving when applause wasnt forthcoming? Motivated by the end result instead of appearances he continued. All he won was some berries, but then again thats all he wanted.
Getting what you want
What is your hearts desire? If it doesnt seem important to others you may be told, or may feel that your efforts are wasted. Its not. Nobody has the right to determine the value of your dreams. This is between you and the Universal Source. As natural beings our desires are natural, and as long as they dont harm anyone it is our divine right to aspire to them. Whether you want enlightenment, a BMW or the ideal vitamin regimen your work will be rewarded. This is providing that you keep trying. You may not get your prize in the way or at the time you first imagined, but it will come to you. Just remember to dance and play along the way. This will make the journey a lot lighter.

latin music comPiano Books: The Top Piano Books To Help You Become a Better Piano Player
There are umpteen zillion piano books available in music stores and online at such places as Amazon. And piano books are usually necessary if your goal is to become a better pianist.
But how does a person know which piano books are necessary and which books are redundant, to say nothing of good or bad. There are books on music theory, scales, chords, books about composers, books about music in general, and of course piano lesson books by Schaum, Williams, Alfred d'Auberge, Bastien, John Thompson, Glover, etc., etc.
The best way is to divide the study of piano playing into it's components:
General lesson piano books:
While there are many, for the adult beginner I would select the series by Bastien titled "The Adult Beginner" It is excellent for adults, and includes quite a bit of music theory along with the piano lessons.
General books about music:
Far and away the most inspiring book about music in general is "The Joy of Music" by Leonard Bernstein. If you want to wrap your brain around music, this is the book for you. (Bernstein, in case you don't know, was both a great conductor and a great composer, having written "West Side Story" and many others.)
Another great selection would be "What To Listen For In Music" by Aaron Copeland. (He was also a great composer.)
Technique books:
The best book I have found for developing finger dexterity and piano technique is a book that has been around for a hundred years or so, but is still the standard. It is "The Virtuoso Pianist in 60 Exercises - Complete: Piano Technique" by C. L. Hanon
Music theory books:
There are many, most of which are complex and difficult to understand, but a good choice for a beginner would be "The Complete Idiot's Guide To Music Theory" by Michael Miller.
Books on piano chords:
In this category I'm going to have to cast all modesty aside and select my own book titled "Piano Chords & Chord Progressions: The Secret Backdoor To Exciting Piano Playing". It's thorough, cheap, and very easy to read and understand.
Song books:
In addition to books that teach all aspects of piano playing, you'll need several good songbooks so you can practice the things you are learning. The piano books you select are largely a matter of taste: if you love rock, you'll want to buy books of rock songs. If you love jazz, or gospel, or pop, or whatever, you'll want to get the song books appropriate to your likes and tastes.
But in addition to regular piano song books, be sure to also get a "fake book". A fake book is a book which contains the melody, the words, and the chord symbols for songs. Usually a fake book has a thousand or more songs in it, so it is a huge bargain.
When I was a teenager fake books were illegal, but they were sold under the counter to musicians all the time. I paid $50. for my first fake book (which I still have, incidentally) which contained only 200 songs. Fifty bucks back then is similar to the national debt now. But it was something working musicians had to have.
Now fake books contain thousands of songs and sell for much less -- often just $25. or so. So be sure to pick one up -- preferably several, as they come in all flavors -- jazz, folk, western, gospel, pop, and just about any other musical classification that you could think of.
All of these books can be obtained at your local music store or from online stores such as Amazon.
Then there is another totally different class of piano books that are part of an audio-visual course. Usually these books are supplementary to the DVD or CD (or both) which comprises the course. This type of piano books are new in the history of the world, because obviously DVDs and CDs haven't existed all that long. This type of course puts it all together, so in addition to reading a book, you can hear the instruction and see it being demonstrated on your own TV or computer screen.
To locate this type of piano book just type in a search query such as "piano lessons on DVD" or "piano instruction on DVD" or a similar phrase. There are many such courses now available through the internet, and more being born every day.
For more info on helpful piano books, please go to "Piano Books: The Top Piano Books That Can Make You a Much Better Piano Player!" In addition, a series of 101 free email lessons on piano chords is available at "Exciting Piano Chords & Sizzling Chord Progressions!"
latin music artistsThe Earth is a Musical Instrument
In 1996, geophysicist Frank Scherbaum teamed up with composer Wolfgang Loos to release "Inner Earth: a seismosonic symphony" (Traumton Records), a recording of natural seismic signals from the earth that Loos creatively rearranged for the CD. The remarkable sounds that are produced - at once electronic and natural - are strange and mesmerizing. As Scherbaum writes, "The fault beats, the volcano whistles and howls, and the Earth rings and hums."
Scherbaum's website, "The Earth As Musical Instrument," discusses the relationship between music and seismology, and offers a short excerpt from the "Inner Earth" CD. The percussive, spectral structure of earthquake signals are typically rather boring, according to Scherbaum, showing acoustically interesting features only in unusual cases. Volcanoes, however, are another story. The spectrum of their tremor signals - believed to be generated by instabilities within the magma system - show regular frequency spacings similar to that of a flute. He has posted a sample signal from Mount Arenal in Costa Rica, transposed into the audible range for the human ear. You can hear how the frequency changes over time, in essence creating a melody.
Crudely stated, earthquakes are drums and volcanoes are flutes.
Other composers have taken a different approach to interpreting the musicality of the earth. Sonification is the process of translating any type of data into sound. Percussionist Marty Quinn collaborated with seismologists at the University of New Mexico to write "The Seismic Sonata," a sonic rendering of the 6.7 Northridge earthquake that struck southern California in 1994. Rather than use the actual sounds of the earth, Quinn mirrored the seismographic representation of the quake by mapping data values to a range of expressive sonic elements. The musical results are not as compelling as the source material used in the Scherbaum/Loos collaboration, however. Similarly, Italian composer Gabriele Rossetti and geologist Alessandro Montanari turned geologic data such as magnetic susceptibility, metallic ion concentrations and helium isotopes from the Italian Apennines into music titled "Balla Con La Terra" ("Dance with the Earth").
