Cities 97 Sampler, Volume 13

Cities 97 Sampler Vol 13 is dedicated to the memory of the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on America.

"The difference between success and failure is information," notes Ritch Esra, and he should know. Along with his partner, Stephen Trumbull, Esra is a leading part of the number one most-reliable source of information on "who's who" and "who does what" in the music business. Best of all, they can tell you where everybody is located.

FIVE VOLUMES OF DATA.

The Music Business Registry (http://www.musicregistry.com) publishes five directories: the "A&R Registry," the "Music Publisher Registry," the "Music Business Attorney Registry" the "Film and Television Music Guide," and the "Record Producer and Recording Engineer Directory." For many in the business, these are indispensable reference works.

"The directories give everyone vital, accurate and the most up-to-date information they need to contact the entire A&R, music publishing, legal and film/TV music communities," Esra states. From comparing notes with dozens of professionals in all of these areas of expertise, I can tell you that no one disputes his claim.

More than one music industry executive has told me that the Music Business Registry publications are worth their weight in platinum. Tess Taylor, president of NARIP (National Association of Record Industry Professionals), says "I couldn't get through one day without the directories from the Music Business Registry. These publications are the finest in the business."

Each directory tells you how to reach industry professionals by regular mail, e-mail, direct dial telephone and fax. The books provide each person's exact title, street address, the name of their assistant and the styles of music in which each executive specializes. Web sites are also included.

UPDATES? YOU WANT UPDATES?

The world of the A&R executive is exciting but ever-changing. Which is to say, there's a lot of turnover in this part of the industry. So much turnover, in fact, that the A&R Registry is completely updated and reprinted every eight weeks, whereas the publisher volume is biannual and the other books come out yearly.

NEED A PRODUCER? HERE ARE 1,700 OF THEM!

Created in partnership with RPM Direct, the "Record Producer & Recording Engineer Directory" presents 1,700 of today's leading Record Producers, Recording Engineers & Remixers throughout the US, Canada and Europe in every genre of music. Included in the book are:

(1) Complete contact information for every Producer, Remixer & Recording Engineer along with a list of their credits.

(2) Producer/Engineer/Remixer Management Companies including a complete
staff listing as well as full client rosters.

(3) A Complete Index to easily locate any producer.

(4) Several Interviews and articles with today's leading Producers & Engineers.

No wonder you can find the Music Business Registry's publications in the offices of top record company executives, music publishers, artist managers, agents, music attorneys, recording artists, studios and other music business professionals everywhere from Los Angeles to London, New York to Nashville, Chicago to Copenhagen, Toronto to Tokyo, Stockholm to Sydney and Minneapolis to Munich.

YOUR SEARCH BEGINS HERE.

Latin Thug - 4 Life Navy - T-Shirt

The ironic thing about the situation is the engineer admits now that he did nothing different on that bass sound than he had on the numerous other records he had done. Of course, no one cared much about the bass sound on the other records. It turns out that the only change in the equation was the song and the player. The engineer said that this one particular bass player just sounds that damn good. He has magic hands and no one else comes close.

This takes me to my review of the Sansamp Bass DI. I bought this pedal about the same time I bought my first microphone, so I've had it for years and years. Before I get into it's tone, I must say that bass is something that totally eludes me. Maybe it's just my guitar player instinct, but I never seam to record a bass sound that impresses me all that much. I'm not sure what the problem is, but more than likely the answer to my question was in the first two paragraphs of this article.

I wanted to blame my recording gear such as the Sansamp Bass DI for me not achieving a bass sound that I really liked. However, I'm starting to think that this is not the case. I read the forums where the big dogs hang out. Someone once asked about the Sansamp Bass DI. I was amazed at how many people truly loved it. I'm talking about engineers who had 20 platinum records on their wall. These guys usually refute anything that's not $3,000 but it seamed that no one had anything negative to say about the Sansamp Bass DI. Impressive.

So I sat down one day to play with my Sansamp. To be honest, I never played with the knobs too much on this pedal. I guess it's a little ridiculous, but I just haven't learned what truly sounds good on a bass. I think the biggest problem with my bass sounds (besides the variety of bass players) has been the quality of the basses. Almost every bass that I record with a DI has this over the top, unusable low end that just sounds like crap. While a few bass sounds do make the subs in the car go to town, I find that most of the time, the bass sound is up above the subwoofer level. It's in the low mids region.

I've been experimenting with knocking out a ton of the lows with the Sansamp and I'm getting closer to what I'm looking for. The tone controls on the Sansamp really do seam to do something cool. They do offer a lot of flexibility. I find it easier in my brain to twist a few knobs on a pedal to extreme settings ( if necessary) than I do using a parametric eq plugin.

So for me, I can't give the Sansamp a tremendous review. Honestly, I can't give a review at all right now. I've not hit the bass sound that I'm looking for, but I'm going to keep trying until I find it. I'm not sure that the Sansamp is the cause or the blame for the this.

With that being said, the best bass sound I've ever gotten was done with a very good bass player with a very good bass. We ran him straight into a Vintech 1272 preamp and it did sound excellent. For whatever reason the Vintech preamp did sound much better than the Presonus M80 I was using. The difference was night and day. It's very possible that the preamp you use the Sansamp DI with could make a huge difference in tone. I think the big engineers like it because it has all the knobs right there so they can fool with them as they choose.

LOWERING PRICES:.

The movie industry tries to fight the surge in cheap dvds and discount dvd sales with lower prices.

Entertainment companies think otherwise. With the increasing demand for cheap DVDs and discount DVDs this has prevented Hollywood studios and major record labels from tapping the full growth potential of those tantalizing markets. Now, some media companies are trying to reverse the tide by cutting prices on new DVDs and CDs low enough to challenge the discount DVD re tailors at their own game.

THE GAME PLAN:

The idea is to give consumers in those markets New DVD Releases at cheap prices. Warner Bros. hopes to get a foothold in the Chinese market by setting the price of its New DVD movie releases there between $2 and $4. NBC Universal would like to tap into Warner's Chinese distribution system and is planning a similar program in Russia. Meanwhile, the four global music companies have just launched a similar strategy in Mexico, in conjunction with distributors, aiming to replace the discounted DVDs with new lines of cut-rate, New DVD Releases and CDs.

The companies are betting that just as Apple Computer helped the U.S. music industry reclaim turf lost to Internet piracy by pricing songs for the iPod at 99 cents apiece, the movie studios and record labels can woo back consumers abroad by slashing the price of DVDs and CDs. Their discs are of superior quality, they say, eliminating the risk of buying substandard goods and justifying the premium they want consumers to pay.

THE SUMMARY:

New DVD Releases in store such as Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Target will cost you around 19.99, HD DVD will be about 24.99 and Blue Ray is in the neighborhood of 29.99. With that being said the savings and the choice is clear, discounted DVDs are popular because of their price.

Parachutes

Limited Edition. Contains a Bonus CD that Includes 'help is Round the Corner,' 'for You (B-side)' and 'careful Where You Stand (B-side).'
Customer Review: Umpteenth Import "Parachutes" CD: Bonus Tracks Deliver!
Hard to believe, but it's been a good four years since the original release of Coldplay's debut album in the UK (the US release would follow in Nov. 2000), and as the phenom called Coldplay is getting bigger and bigger, it's now clear that "Parachutes" is a classic, in every sense of the word. By now, the original 10 tracks of the album all have become so instantly familiar, yet never tiresome. There is of course "Yellow", the US break-through single but for me probably the weakest track on the set. Check out instead "Shiver", "Don't Panic" (with the immortal line "We Live in a Beautiful World"), "Trouble" and Sparks", 4 other singles from the album (all of them still available on Amazon). This import version of "Parachutes" (13 tracks, 49 min.) comes with 3 additional tracks on a separate CD: "Help is 'Round the Corner", which is a b-side from the "Yellow" single, and then also "Careful Where You Stand" and "For You", both of which are the b-sides from the "Shiver" single. All the bonus tracks are from around the same time as the "Parachutes" recording sessions, and are a great fit with the original tracks of the album. Who knows whether the next Coldplay album (rumored for Sprong 2005) will be any good, but for sure it's gonna be a monster, and Coldplay is well on its way to be the next U2. Meanwhile, enjoy the humble and intimate debut album which I dare say Chris and the boys will never surpass.
Customer Review: Parachutes lands with out a hitch
The new found sons of Brit Pop have come up with a gem of a debut album with Parachutes. From the moment the album is placed in the stereo it seems to flow timelessly from great track to great track. Parachutes has a great slow melodic feel to it that can just set you into a really good mood, but on occasion it ups the pace and you find yourself unkowingly bobbing your head and humming in time. I originally owned the regular Parachutes album but I gave it to my girlfriend as I had no money and I needed a good gift for her. A friend of mine knowing I really liked the album found the box set and ordered it for me. The Box set is by far the best album purchase I have made since Pinkfloyds Shine On Box set. The little extras that it contains just serve to make an already complete album brilliant. I would recommend this album to any one who hasn't yet experienced Coldplay or even if you own Parachutes, the singles in the Box set still make it a worthy buy.

My great grandfather, T.E. Mitchell ran a large cattle ranch in NE New Mexico in the late 1800's. This story came down through the family. I believe it's true, but have no way of fully proving it.

During branding season a chuck wagon was used to move around from pasture to pasture and feed the cowboys after their days work, as well as waking them up to breakfast each morning. T.E. had a cook they called "Cookie"; not very original, I know, as most chuck wagon cooks were called that in those days.

One morning just about dawn when the men were still dozing, my great grandfather awoke to hear Cookie singing a little ditty to himself quietly. TE rolled over and looked towards the back of the chuck wagon where the cook was kneading dough for biscuits. Cookie was very into his work and once in a while, as he sang, he would do a little jig and dance to the tune.

However, as Mitchell watched, he saw in the dim firelight a small shape off to the side. It was difficult to see in the early light, but the shape was moving. It seemed like a small black blur and would move toward Cookie and then back off a little. As he watched, my great grandfather finally realized it was a skunk, and it was about to bite Cookie! As the cook sang, the skunk would spring forward only to back off again when a dance step was orchestrated.

TE always slept with his 30-30 next to him on the bedroll, so he grabbed the rifle and spoke very quietly. "Cookie," he said," I'm going to shoot at your feet, Jump!" Mr. Mitchell had a soft spoken voice, but it carried authority, and as the words left his mouth, Cookie jumped right up onto the chuck wagon tail gate and landed in the middle of the dough he was kneading.

The shot was a good one and the skunk was killed instantly, not even able to discharge the dreaded skunk smell. They knew it had to be rabid to attack a human like that, and in those days a bite from a rabid animal was often fatal. So, even though the cowboys had to go without biscuits that morning, they continued the roundup in good spirits.

When I tell people I play the piano, the most common reply I hear is Oh Ive always wanted to play but Heres are the top-ten reasons that adults give for not becoming a musician- even though its their secret ambition. Read on for how to overcome these barriers and achieve your dream.

"Im just too busy"

Most people assume that you will need hours of free time every week set aside for lengthy practicing to get any good. This idea is a complete fiction- in fact I would say about 5 minutes each day is fine at first (and if you dont have 5 minutes per day to spare, I dont believe you!). If you book lessons with a teacher, you will be committing some time at least each week to concentrate on learning, which may even be enough at first.. Dont kid yourself youll be less busy in three months time because if you dont start learning now you probably never will.

"I work shifts/ long hours so I cant fit time for lessons in"

Many teachers will offer lessons in the daytime, evenings and weekends- so you should be able to find something that suits you- just call up some local teachers and ask when they have spaces in their schedule. There are also a good number of online courses for most instruments. Or you could buy a Teach Yourself Book and take it from there.

"Lessons are too expensive"

Again, you could start off teaching yourself from a book- but not all lessons are as expensive as you might think. I teach in groups, which keeps the cost down for the individual, and also turns lessons into a social activity. Find out if there are any teachers in your area who do this.

"Im too old"

Your definitely never too old to learn a musical instrument! In fact Ive found adults of all ages learn much faster than young children initially. Learning new cognitive skills has even been found to have great health benefits.

I wont be able to learn

Well, Ive never met anyone incapable of learning to play yet! Obviously people have different standards and natural abilities, theyll learn at different rates. But everyone will be able to play to some degree. The best thing is to ask yourself what you want to achieve and then just go for it.

Ill never be any good, so whats the point in starting now

This depends what you mean by good. OK, I admit if your 57 and never played a note in your life theirs no chance of you becoming a virtuoso after ten lessons. But is that really why you secretly want to learn your chosen instrument? How about learning just for the sheer achievement of acquiring a new skill. Or being able to pick out a few carols at Christmas. Or finally write down and record that song thats been going round in your head your whole life. These are all achievable goals you could reach after learning an instrument for just a short time. And does it even matter if your any good if you really enjoy playing?

Ive been told Im tone-deaf and so I cant learn

The short answer to this is, your almost certainly not. Tone deafness is a very rare and specific condition, and music lessons should help improve your listening skills.

I dont think any teachers will be interested in taking on an older learner

Most teachers I know (including myself) really enjoy teaching adults because they have made the decision to have lessons themselves and appreciate lessons so much more than children who are learning all the time. Maybe your children are having lessons, why not ask their teacher if they could teach you as well? Im sure they would be pleased to, or at least recommend another teacher with vacancies.

Id love to learn again- but I hated my lessons when I was younger

A lot of adults have horror stories about severe piano teachers rapping their knuckles with rulers for making mistakes, and punishing them for not practicing 30 minutes a day. Luckily, there arent many (any?) people like that around anymore. Please dont let a bad experience from the past stop you from achieving what you want today. Find a teacher, let them know what you want to achieve and Im sure they will be pleased to help. If you dont enjoy their lessons, let them know why- music lessons should be enjoyable, and as an adult you will be the one in control, with your teacher there to help you.

Ive heard learning to read music is really hard

Learning to read music is really very straightforward. And some teachers might be happy for you to play by ear. Theres a lot of advice on reading music, on the web which can get you started.

I hope none of these excuses are holding you back from becoming a musician! Good luck in learning to play your chosen instrument.
