Chinese New Year Spectacular - Where Art Meets Technology

Imagine a backdrop of a vast ocean with surging waves for a grand dance called The Eight Immortals Cross the Sea. Or picture a fairyland landscape and palace for a dance called Grinding an Iron Pestle Down to a Needle. These are but two of the many classic creations used as a backdrop by NTDTV for its Chinese New Year Spectacular show playing at New York City Radio City Music Hall from February 14 17.

Tranquil artistic concepts from Chinese paintings and the magnanimous charisma of Western paintings are combined with a hi-tech application of traditional art, photo-electricity and projection used as backdrops. The combination makes for a rare delight of artistic performances. It is not surprising that the show ranked 7th on Billboard Magazines top 10 shows in Feb 2006 based on ticket sales for the 2006 shows at Radio City Music Hall.

Li Wencheng, head of the New England Monte Jade Science and Technology Association, said, The backdrop for the NTDTV Chinese New Year Show is indeed rather unique and the skillful application of projection and photo-electricity has to be the creation of an expert.

The backdrop makers of the NTDTV show have extended the effect of our backdrops to its extreme, noted Radio Citys Manager.

The enormous background screen used during NTDTVs Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall has the effect of bringing the audience into the performance. In a typical stage setting, it is difficult to create a multidimensional effect, even with a large number of performers. The space on stage has limitations, and stage props also often give people a feeling of things being faked.

However, when Soprano-Alto Yang Jiansheng sings a vocal solo, she stands alone on the stage with no accompanying dance or stage props. However, the magnificent backdrop makes the audience feel as though they are right in the midst of the performance.

For example, in the 2006 Chinese New Year Spectacular, throughout the show the backdrop kept changing along with each performance, from misty rain, pavilions and towers, to the water-bound country in south China to shining spears and armored horses and famous mountains and rivers; from green bamboo and red flowers and the change of four seasons to the sun, the moon, the stars and the auspicious clouds in the highest heavens.

Colorful events that took place in the thousands of years of Chinese history were replayed to perfection on stage. The design of the backdrops was definitely the creation of an expert. The backdrops did not use dominant color themes to supersede the performers on the stage. Instead, they provided a very logical and harmonious artistic atmosphere.

Audiences of all ages and walks of life are guaranteed to be impressed by the backdrops in the 2007 show at Radio City Music Hall. Whether for the artistic and technologically advanced use of the screen or the magnificent performances, it is a show you dont want to miss!

Music Business Contacts: Music Business Registry connects artists, managers, publishers, producers &

"The difference between success and failure is information," notes Ritch Esra, and he should know. Along with his partner, Stephen Trumbull, Esra is a leading part of the number one most-reliable source of information on "who's who" and "who does what" in the music business. Best of all, they can tell you where everybody is located.

FIVE VOLUMES OF DATA.

The Music Business Registry (http://www.musicregistry.com) publishes five directories: the "A&R Registry," the "Music Publisher Registry," the "Music Business Attorney Registry" the "Film and Television Music Guide," and the "Record Producer and Recording Engineer Directory." For many in the business, these are indispensable reference works.

"The directories give everyone vital, accurate and the most up-to-date information they need to contact the entire A&R, music publishing, legal and film/TV music communities," Esra states. From comparing notes with dozens of professionals in all of these areas of expertise, I can tell you that no one disputes his claim.

More than one music industry executive has told me that the Music Business Registry publications are worth their weight in platinum. Tess Taylor, president of NARIP (National Association of Record Industry Professionals), says "I couldn't get through one day without the directories from the Music Business Registry. These publications are the finest in the business."

Each directory tells you how to reach industry professionals by regular mail, e-mail, direct dial telephone and fax. The books provide each person's exact title, street address, the name of their assistant and the styles of music in which each executive specializes. Web sites are also included.

UPDATES? YOU WANT UPDATES?

The world of the A&R executive is exciting but ever-changing. Which is to say, there's a lot of turnover in this part of the industry. So much turnover, in fact, that the A&R Registry is completely updated and reprinted every eight weeks, whereas the publisher volume is biannual and the other books come out yearly.

NEED A PRODUCER? HERE ARE 1,700 OF THEM!

Created in partnership with RPM Direct, the "Record Producer & Recording Engineer Directory" presents 1,700 of today's leading Record Producers, Recording Engineers & Remixers throughout the US, Canada and Europe in every genre of music. Included in the book are:

(1) Complete contact information for every Producer, Remixer & Recording Engineer along with a list of their credits.

(2) Producer/Engineer/Remixer Management Companies including a complete
staff listing as well as full client rosters.

(3) A Complete Index to easily locate any producer.

(4) Several Interviews and articles with today's leading Producers & Engineers.

No wonder you can find the Music Business Registry's publications in the offices of top record company executives, music publishers, artist managers, agents, music attorneys, recording artists, studios and other music business professionals everywhere from Los Angeles to London, New York to Nashville, Chicago to Copenhagen, Toronto to Tokyo, Stockholm to Sydney and Minneapolis to Munich.

Piano Playing is Easier than You Think When You Understand Musical Form

Form is the key that unlocks the musical map of a song or a musical compostition. Like a house has rooms, so a song has rooms or sections.

Chord progressions come in sections, like one room in a house. You can put several different rooms together to make a big house, or you can live in a one room house. Just like people. In most 3rd world countries people live in one room houses -- which means, of course, that much of the world lives in one-room houses.

Those of us who live in the West generally live in multi-room houses.

But there are also musical houses -- we call them songs -- that are built out of several different rooms -- several different chord progressions. Some of them, like mansions and castles, go on and on and get quite involved.

But most songs are like many modest houses -- they have 2 or 3 rooms, sometimes 4 -- built using 2 or 3 or 4 different chord progressions.

Each "room" in a musical house is called a theme, or a "motif". The first theme is always called "A". The next theme is called "B", the next theme is called "C", and so on. Most songs only have 2 or 3 themes, but these themes often repeat.

For example, let's say we have a chord progression that goes like this:

C Am7 Dm7 G7

...and then it repeats those same 4 chords...

and then we have another chord progression that goes like this:
Gm7 C7 F Fm7 Bb7 Eb G7

...and then the first chord progression is used again as the song ends.

This song would have a musical form of A, A, B, A -- main theme, repeat of main theme, contrasting theme, main theme.

If a song went like this:

Theme contrast theme

it would be known as ABA musical form

If a song went like this:

Theme, theme, contrast, theme

.then the song would be in AABA musical form

The "B" section of a song is sometimes called the "bridge", or the "release", or the "chorus". These terms usually mean the same thing -- depending upon the form used.

Can you guess what this might be called?

Theme - contrast - theme - contrast - theme - contrast - theme - contrast

Right you are! A B A B form.

This is also known as "verse-chorus" form.

Most popular songs fall into one of these forms:

A B A

A A B A

A B A C A

A B A B

Why should you care?

Because if you know songs are constructed this way, you can look at songs with smart eyes -- you know what to look for, and once you determine the form, you have a "mental map" of the song -- you're not just wandering from chord to chord anymore.

In addition, most songs are proportional. That is -- 4 bars of section A, then 4 bars of section B, then another 4 bars of section A, and so on. You will find TONS and TONS of popular songs that are 32 bars long in A A B A form -- 8 bars of theme A, 8 bars of theme A repeated, then a bridge of 8 bars, finishing with 8 bars of theme A.

Does that give you an advantage knowing that?

It gives you a HUGE advantage because you know what to look for, and you know that if you learn theme A you have automatically learned 75% of the song! All that remains is to learn the 8 bars of the bridge, and you've got it!

And that's why you need to learn about form.

Bongos And Congas - Drums With A Difference

If you are interested in beats, then you are sure to be interested in other instruments besides the usual drums that can give you the right beats. Well then let us discuss bongos and congas from the family of drums.

Bongo is a small version of drums. Actually it is a compilation of two open-ended drums. These two drums are joined with each other. Drum heads are normally made of animal skins, but plastic made drum heads are also available. The body is made of metal, wood and sometimes with ceramic also. Both the bongos are of different size. And for that reason each of them sounds different. You have to coordinate between both of them, to play it well.

A pair of simple bongos does not have those stretchable drum heads that can be tuned to play different notes from different parts. But the better quality bongos have this option. Their heads are adjustable. These heads are fixed firmly with metal made bars.

The way of playing bongos is very interesting. You have to use your finger strips, heel of your hand and thumbs. You need to strike the heads with the help of these hand parts. Striking different place of the head will produce different sound. Special drum oil is necessary to protect the head of the bongo. Otherwise your hand and the air will absorb all the moisture of the bongo skin. This will make the bongo skin dry. It can also pave way for cracks.

The best thing about bongo is that it is small, and not very much expensive. And if you know how to play it and if you have some friends who can play bongo, then you can form a band. If all of you play together some small groove then it will sound amazing.

Conga is almost like bongo. But it measures quite high in comparison to other drums. It is slim build and single headed. It is a Cuban drum but probably it is derived from Africa.

The shells of most of the congas are made of wood or fiberglass. The playing system of conga is almost like bongo. They are normally 75cm tall.

Congas are used in both popular and folk music. African music has a varied use of congas. This instrument is also very popular in Rumba, Afro Caribbean, Latin and salsa music.

Bongos and congas are almost similar kind of instrument. But former are smaller than latter. There sound is not totally similar but they are not that much different also.

Both are rhythm instruments. Their playing style is almost same. Both of them are very popular. They can be used in almost every kind of music.

But there are some difference between bongos and congas. Bongos are easy to carry. But congas are not. Both of them have a different look also. Congo just looks a bigger version of bongo usually. But if you watch closely and minutely, then you can trace the difference. But whatever is the difference is, it can be said that both bongos and congas are brilliant instruments. And both of them can change the way a particular song sounds.

Put Movies On Zune

Putting movies on Zune is not difficult. In fact, using the zune software, it is very straight forward and easy.

The zune software allows you to sync your movies and video files from either itunes or windows media player. By default, when you connect the zune player to a computer, it will automatically synchronize between windows media player. It will then download your movies and videos files in the media library onto the zune player automatically.

The zune software is free to download. However you might want to take note of the specifications. Currently, it only supports Windows XP, home and professional, media editions as well as Windows Vista only. You can check the system requirements at http://www.zune.net

However, I do find the conversion process takes quite long even for small video files. Also, I tried the Zune marketplace where I can directly download the files on my Zune player. Unfortunately, sometimes the synchronization will fail and I will have to try 2 to 3 times before it will download properly. Its most likely a bug and I think they will fix it soon.

Currently, the Zune player can support three video formats namely WMV, MPEG-4 and H.264. Most resolutions and bitrates are allowed since the zune software will automatically convert the videos files to be compatible for playing on the zune player.

If you want to play your DVD movies on zune, you will need a DVD to zune video converter since the zune software does not convert different video formats for you. Im using the Cucusoft DVD to Zune converter and it works well. You can use other software to convert DVD movies to Zune.

If you do not want to do the conversion, there are two options. One is to download from Zune marketplace. It is similar to the itunes store where you pay per download. They also have a subscription service where they provide a certain number of points which is deducted when you download a movie, mp3 or video. There are some bugs with the zune software and the zune marketplace so I would not recommend using it for the time being.

The other option is to purchase a membership at a zune download site. These Zune download sites let you download unlimited numbers of movies, videos and mp3 for a one time charge or on a yearly basis. It is cheaper and I highly recommend it if you are a movie or music junkie.

Ricky Lim is an avid Zune fan. Discover the best Zune download sites recommended by him.
