Baby Grand Pianos - Attractive Choice for the Serious Musician

Let's face it. Nothing compares to the beauty and attractiveness of a baby grand piano. The curves, the strings, the way the whole thing looks just makes you want to go over and play.

Baby grand pianos give the serious musician with limited funds the ability to own something that one can be proud to play and that will last for years and years.

While not as deep and rich sounding as their grand piano counterparts, the baby grand piano is perfect for students who are serious about music and who invest substantial time and energy into playing.

Small, yet not small in sound, baby grand pianos offer something the upright and grand does not, affordable elegance. There's something about the way an instrument looks that either makes you want to play it or not. While an upright is fine for beginners and amateur pianists, it just doesn't inspire those who need that certain aesthetic touch a baby grand provides.

And let's not forget about the fact that a baby grand can fit into most living rooms as well. Many are 5 feet or less and can make a boring living room into a grand concert stage. It is the centerpiece of many musical homes and deservedly so! Houses with pianos in them seem to have more life. As soon as you enter the room and see a beautiful baby grand, you either want to play or hear it.

Expect to pay anywhere from $2000 to $10,000 or more for a decent instrument but also expect to get many, many years of enjoyment as well!

Take Advantage Of The Economic Downturn - To Become Your Own Boss!

It is that phase in the economic cycle when people do a reality check. Uncertainty looms ahead, and managements drive themselves crazy figuring out where the next big check is going to come from to keep the wheels of the organization running. Cowering in our own cubicle or workbench, we never know when they will hand us our proverbial pink slip and bid us goodbye.

There are two alternatives to handle this economic condition. The first is the tried and tested. Dignity in one pocket and resume in the other, we knock at the doors of the other companies whose outward facade conveys an impression of everything being hunky-dory inside. And get rejected by the people who aren't sure when they themselves will get the boot.

Let us consider this alternative from a different angle. When we were born, we used to be cleaned and washed, fed and clothed and generally taken care of. We used to look up to somebody to do all that for us. Haven't we continued with the same pattern, of looking up to somebody, of expecting a job to become available that we can perform, which will feed us and clothe us and generally fulfill our material needs? Isn't it time we grew up?

As kids, we were given an extra dollop of ice-cream for being good. Remember the visits of the Santa Claus every year? Now we expect somebody to pat our ego and nurse our pride with lofty-sounding designations and nifty little perks - the corner office, that special parking space, the vacation with the family, the topped-up bonus and that ESOP handout, the promotion that gives us the opportunity to look down upon people who once were peers, thank you. And when these goodies are not forthcoming, we sulk and we pout and we go look for another Santa Claus. Tell me really, have we grown up at all?

And so let us see what the second alternative looks like. Here it is!

Which is to use the season of doom and economic gloom to go inward and realize that this actually is an opportunity to get out of the rat race once and for all and do our own thing. Set up our own shop. Be our own boss. Hoist our own flag. I am running out of symbolism, but you get the idea.

Returning again to the kid analogy, remember the things that we enjoyed doing when we were young and not yet entered the rat race, the things that thrilled us the most? When we did what we did because we liked doing what we were doing, and not because we had to do what we ended up doing because that was what the boss wanted us to do. Or else. There is money to be made, you know, in doing things that we enjoy and are passionate about. It is only a question of figuring out how. Let me also tell you, that the figuring out how happens only during times of economic recession, and not when the going is good and everybody is smiling and doing the rumba.

"Realize your own potential" becomes a cliche when the HR boys and girls use it while dangling the golden cage before us. It becomes a mantra when we use it to really understand how far we can go when we are on our own. Have we forgotten life outside the cage? Have we forgotten - or worse, never ever known? - what it means to be free and to do our own thing? To set our own goals, to make our own targets, and to soar as high as our wings and our ambitions can take us?

Or have we become rather addicted to our inner child's needs being taken care of by that neatly-suited-booted HR manager and his / her team of cohorts and headhunters and detectives, spying on every move we make outside the office and trying to figure out what must be going on in our mind, so that we can be, uh, appropriately manipulated?

Or have we rather come to enjoy the performance reviews where the senior takes malicious pleasure in nitpicking the omissions and commissions that we may or may not have indulged in throughout the year? Like the stern teacher handing over the grades in class. The armpits used to sweat the same way then too, didn't they?

Or have we rather come to relish the politics and the backbiting and the gossip and the bitching in the office and the workplace? The latest news about this affair and that, the latest news on who is in favor and who has fallen out of favor, the devil who is badmouthing about us behind the back ... oh, won't we miss them all?

Let's step out of the world we have immersed ourselves in and become comfortable in. And step into the world of freedom. Let's find the vocation that we enjoy the most. Let's learn the right skills that are needed to survive and thrive in the market. And take the plunge with faith and belief in self. Success and prosperity are waiting to be ours, if only we reach out for them. Let us be brave for a change. Let's reach out! Now!

For A GREAT Dance - Play The Hits!

It seems to me that too many bands spend way too much time playing what they want to hear, rather than what is right for the crowd at any particular moment. Whether this fact stems from rampant narcissism (Look at me!), an inability to read their crowd, or an extremely limited set list - the result is the same. Dancers tend to sit down when they don't know the tunes.

Conversely, some deejays and bands can't seem to make it through a single night without hauling out hoary old chestnuts like YMCA, New York New York, and The Macarena. While granting that there will always be a market - somewhere - for such tunes, these particular songs (along with Stairway To Heaven, Freebird, and anything from Mamma Mia!) run a very high risk of turning off a big chunk of your dancers. For that reason alone, they should be played sparingly (every February 29th, for example.) Alternate tunes - with a much lower "cheese" factor - exist which inspire many fewer cases of violence against music providers.

Even big-name performers can occasionally benefit from this same advice. I once sat through an entire Carlos Santana set without hearing a single tune I recognized (and I know a bunch). Now, you can add me to the list of former Santana fans.

But last night, the lovely Gina Tanner and I attended a concert performance by Gladys Knight. In a 90-minute set, Gladys perfectly balanced new songs and borrowed tunes (made famous by others) with all of her greatest hits. No matter how many times she has sung them, she knows that they are what makes the cash register ring.

Wedding Like The Stars

Wedding Videography is the new Photography. No a days all you hear about is how awesome Wedding Videography is. So what is it? Not everyone knows about it... yet! Let me give you some insight to how amazing Wedding Videography is and how much you'll want it at your picturesque Wedding day.

First off, Photography is great. You capture beautiful still shots that can be remembered forever. However, Videography is just a step above that. Not only can you capture amazing still shots of your beautiful Wedding day, but you are also able to hear voices, speeches, laughter, music, etc. Instead of seeing a still shot of you and your new spouse dancing that first dance together, you'll actually see the beautiful dance, your hear the emotional music, and will see the sweet tears.

Videography allows you in years to come to put the DVD into your player and watch the wedding day as if it was right before you. No more missing those small special moments anymore! With a Videographer rolling the camcorder at all times, you're sure to never miss a thing. Videographers are special people, who have to not only roll the camera, but has to make sure that the feeling and emotions felt that Wedding day is transferred over appropriately to film.

Taking footage and setting it to the music and style of your choice in the background, a Videographer goes though usually 16 hours of footage and brings back those special moments and emotional feelings by selecting scenes from the brides getting ready to the venue and shots of the decorations, to the ceremony, vows, tears, guests, dinner, first dance with your new spouse, dances with your parents, cake cutting, garter & bouquet toss, interviews with important guests and anything of importance that may have happened at your Wedding.

Many of the stars have started using Wedding Videography. Many interviews, one particular interview with a star, Christina Aguilera where she talks about how having a Wedding Videographer was the most important vendor to have at her wedding. Talking about how you can have your cake, flower, centerpieces, your dress, etc. But if you don't have someone to document your Wedding Day... all those things are worthless and wouldn't matter cause you wouldn't remember the Wedding day as it was ever again. I know many people that didn't have a Videographer at their Wedding and they say it was the worst mistake. Pictures are great.

However, Wedding Videography is just so much more. Videography is real, its people in motion, its spoken words, and its just real and that is so very important. Another option is if a guest at your Wedding video recorded parts of your Wedding, beg them for that footage! Once you've acquired the footage, take that footage to a Wedding Videographer and they can transfer that footage to a DVD for you and fix it so it becomes prettier, my stylish, and much more cinematic.

So don't let that happen to you! Make sure that the first vendor you acquire is a Wedding Videographer. You want to make sure you have one by your side to document the most special day of you life!

RIAA Files Second Wave of Lawsuits

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has launched a second wave of lawsuits against users of internet2 (a specialized high speed version of the internet that makes it ideal for file sharing). By adding 20 new schools to the list, RIAA has greatly expanded the number of students involved in the case.

"As long as students continue to corrupt this specialized academic network for the flagrant theft of music, we will continue to make it clear that there are consequences for these unlawful actions," said Cary Sherman, President, RIAA. "With the multitude of legal music alternatives available to students today, there is simply no excuse for this ongoing, illegal downloading on college campuses."

RIAA is the trade group that represents the U.S. recording industry. Its mission is to foster a business and legal climate that supports and promotes our members' creative and financial vitality. Its members are the record companies that comprise the most vibrant national music industry in the world. RIAA members create, manufacture and/or distribute approximately 90% of all legitimate sound recordings produced and sold in the United States.

"Whether its done on a computer at home or one in a college dorm room, the act of theft is one and the same," said Sherman. "These lawsuits have had a significant educational impact on the public and have helped to arrest the staggering growth of digital music theft. We will continue to aggressively pursue them."

Happy Birthday Ideas

Happy 75th to your Dad! How about having some "oldies" going in the background and have tables arranged so there can be dancing going on after dinner? Or sending guests a form (well before the party, with instructions to get that form back to you), and have each person write down a good memory involving your Dad. He will cherish these. You can put the filled out forms into book form (or put nicely into a scrapbook) and he can look back on this and enjoy it for many years.

It might be fun to dig up some info from the year he was born and stand up, maybe in between courses and announce what the price of milk was in the year Dad was born, who was president, the most popular music, dance, etc.

Some trivia games (with small prizes awarded to winners, perhaps), perhaps historical questions (again, around your dad's year of birth) or seeing who can answer the most questions about your Dad (questions can be as simple as his favorite food, color, favorite vacation, that type of thing).

Celebrating such a milestone is always a lot of fun. It's a time to reflect on the years past and share all the memories the family and friends have of the guest of honor.

Family trivia questions with dividing up the guests into teams can be lots of fun, and if you are someone you know are technically savvy you can put together slide show/video of his life from the begging until now...choose songs that fit the era the photos are from.

Get the entire family involved by making some very special memories for your dad. Ask each child and/or grandchild to write a one-page memoir of his or her most special memories. Then put them into a scrapbook and display it on a table for all to see. Guaranteed he will still be looking at it years to come.

You might want to have someone with a digital or Polaroid camera take photos of the guest in their black and white garb...in a simple white frame they have a nice little souvenir of the party.

To follow the theme you might do a short trivia game, teaming up guests, 3 to 4 to a team. Make all the questions about your wife ranging from very easy to impossible to answer. Guests get into a very competitive mood and have a lot of fun trying to answer the most questions correctly.

At the "sound of the bell" or time's up whistle teams pass their answer sheet to the team to the right (does this sound a lot like school??) and the answers are corrected. Prizes for the team that gets the most correct. Trivia questions should be from her childhood (family and oldest friends can answer those) her school days, her work days, and her current life. About 20 questions are good.

Those are both activities that are fun and memorable. Then with the visiting, music, food and drink you will have a beautiful beach party.

Origins Of "Non-Classical" Guitar

In 1865 a number of Portuguese arrived to work the mighty Pioneer Sugar Plantations and through them, the island musicians were exposed to the first "non-classical" guitar styles - some 50 - 60 years before it moved into the limelight of American popular music.

The guitar quickly became part of island life and because European music or technical approaches offered little that suited the Polynesian's expressive needs, they literally re-invented both the instrument and it's music, to bring forth a style know as "Ki ho alu", or "slack key guitar".

The name was used by the Hawaiians to describe the method of tuning - several strings were loosened or slackened down to spell out the sound of a basic triad, usually major. Many tunings exist, but the original and still the most common, is called - "taro patch" tuning ..

1 2 3 4 5 6 D B G D G D

Tunings were originally developed and kept within the family, then handed down to succeeding generations as a family secret. Nowadays, tunings continue to be developed, but the veil of secrecy is gone and ideas are willingly shared by all good players.

Since 1960 there has been a tremendous upsurge of interest among young Hawaiians in the traditional slack key methods and a great deal of wonderful music can be found within the recorded works of Gabby Pahanui, Atta Isaacs, The Breamer Brothers, Raymond Kane and other masters of the style. Their music is tightly locked into the modern Polynesian psyche as Flamenco is interlaced with the Spanish, and Jazz with the Afro-American way of life.

Slack Key and its "Taro Patch" tuning were taken one step further when an eleven year old Hawaiian schoolboy, Joseph Kekuku, as early as 1885, placed the guitar flat on his lap and using a comb discovered the sweet sounds of the slide guitar.

He progressed from this comb a railway bolt, a knife or tumbler, and finally to a steel bar which he designed and made in the school workshop. To increase the volume he designed metal finger and thumb picks shaped to fit his right hand. When after some experimentation, Kekuku realized that this new style of playing was more than a novelty, he became determined to tap its potential and master whatever his findings brought to life.

He worked hard and while still at school, gave professional concerts in Honolulu. Many classmates learnt from Joseph and took his method of playing back to their homes throughout the islands, and from there it spread throughout the world. In 1904 Joseph Kekuku moved to the American mainland and begun a full-time playing and teaching career. His ability to communicate with audiences opened the doors for the international acceptance of Hawaiian and steel guitar music. Between 1919 and 1927 he toured Europe and played before the Kings and Queens of many countries' - he set up effective teaching practices in Chicago and Boston and finally died in 1932. He was considered to be "a great teacher of the steel guitar and the possessor of the sweetest-toned guitar in the world."

Thanks to Joseph Kekuku and the early Hawaiian steel-men, the instrument and its associated musical forms soon established an identity of their own. But, Joseph's very effectiveness in focusing attention onto his steel-type playing detracted from its original source - Slack Key. This form remained virtually unknown to the non-Hawaiian' music world until the 1950's.

The very year that Kekuku died saw the birth of the electric guitar - the first Rickenbacker Frypans became available in 1932 and a new era began. The steel guitar was more suited to electrification than its "Spanish" counterpart - a large magnet could be placed above and below the strings without impeding the player's right hand movement; and since this breakthrough was solely associated with the Hawaiian players, their music spread to even wider fields. Thousands of recordings were made and magnificent players such as Sol Hoopii, Dick McIntire, Andy Iona, Danny steward and Bobby Nicholls were much sought after. These men, plus a few others, created music of great beauty that is now virtually non-existent. If an opportunity to hear the music of these now-forgotten pre-war Hawaiian artists arises - grab it!

The development of the Hawaiian guitar through these early electric years is a complicated story as leading players tried and tested new tunings and technical approaches.

Today, the pure Hawaiian style is best preserved in the playing of Jerry Byrd - an American guitarist living in Honolulu. Electrification itself made the steel guitar a force to be reckoned with in Country music and it's sound became an essential ingredient in the style known as Western-swing. Leon McAuliffe, guitarist with Bob Wills Texas Playboys, McAuliffe the first great player in this area.

Today, steel guitars come equipped with two necks of ten strings, usually tuned to E9th and C6th, plus pedals and knee levers to raise or lower each string - a formidable instrument indeed. Few men can claim to have mastered its complicated mechanisms, but those that have are giants of the first order. To hear pedal steel guitar at its best, listen to Buddy Emmons or Curly Chalker (both have one foot in the world of Jazz and the other in Western Swing). For the best of Country style, catch Lloyd Green and Australia's own Kenny Kitching.
